West Des Moines is the largest and most prominent suburb of Des Moines. As
of October 2004, the city of West Des Moines boasted a population of 52,655 people.
By 2010, West Des Moines is projected to have a population count of 61,569.
West Des Moines was originally incorporated as Valley Junction in 1893, the name
reflecting its railroad heritage. In 1938, Valley Junction changed its
name to West Des Moines. West Des Moines has grown into one of the most
thriving cities in the State of Iowa. The city is now a notable center of
commerce and business holding two large enclosed shopping malls, a historic
shopping district, and many large corporations that make up a sizable portion of the employment
base in the Greater Des Moines Metro Area. West Des Moines is known for
its high quality of life, great business climate, and fast pace of development
that place it in the top echelon of suburban cities in the Midwest.
