West Des Moines is the largest and most prominent suburb of Des Moines.  As of October 2004, the city of West Des Moines boasted a population of 52,655 people.  By 2010, West Des Moines is projected to have a population count of 61,569.  West Des Moines was originally incorporated as Valley Junction in 1893, the name reflecting its railroad heritage.  In 1938, Valley Junction changed its name to West Des Moines.  West Des Moines has grown into one of the most thriving cities in the State of Iowa.  The city is now a notable center of commerce and business holding two large enclosed shopping malls, a historic shopping district, and many large corporations that make up a sizable portion of the employment base in the Greater Des Moines Metro Area.  West Des Moines is known for its high quality of life, great business climate, and fast pace of development that place it in the top echelon of suburban cities in the Midwest.
