644 18th Street-Cafe Di Scala- This historic Victorian-era home sitting on a prominent corner of the neighborhood is home to one of Des Moines' finest and most cutting edge Italian Bistro-type cafes, known as Cafe Di Scala.

697 18th Street- One of the most ornate of the Queen Anne Victorians in Sherman Hill, this colorful home was built in 1885 and has a prominent corner tower.

Lowell Apartments-722 18th Street- The four story Lowell Apartments fills the center of this photo.  This 17 unit apartment building was finished in 1921 and is one of many brick apartment buildings found on 18th Street.

732 18th Street-Concord Apartments- The Concord Apartments is one of the taller buildings in Sherman Hill found on the most densely populated stretch of the neighborhood.  This five story building has 41 living units and was built in 1919.

740 18th Street- This apartment, storage, and office building was once home to a firehouse that served the historic neighborhood.  Originally built in 1919, a portion of the old firehouse now serves as indoor parking available to neighborhood residents that wish to pay to park their car indoors instead of on the crowded streets.

744 18th Street-  A small Victorian Cottage-styled home on 18th Street still remains perfectly preserved.

805 18th Street- A strangely placed home sits back from the front street at a further distance than other area homes, creating a nice garden in the street view fronting the home.  The home was built in 1883, but it may have moved, resulting in the odd setback.

818 18th Street Apartments- With decorative limestone detailing more reminiscent of a smaller school house, this 7 unit apartment building on 18th Street was completed in 1908.

824 18th Street- A two-and-a-half story wood frame four-plex on 18th Street is one of several found in the neighborhood.  This four-plex was built in the 1980's to match the architectural surroundings of the neighborhood. but has seen considerable exterior renovation since then.

829 18th Street- It could use a few repairs, but this is an eye-catching, brick framed Italianate home on 18th Street.  Notice the odd roofing material/shingles that were used.

833 18th Street-Elmhurst Apartments- The Gothic Revival-styled Elmhurst Apartments is an ornate brick apartment building that was built in 1914 and currently contains 14 apartment units.

905 18th Street- This brick built Queen Anne home sits on 18th Street and dates back to 1880.  Fire records show this may have once been a carriage house that was eventually moved and converted to a residence.

911 18th Street- Another brick exterior Queen Anne home is next to the one pictured above.  This very old home was built in 1863.

919 18th Street- A well maintained form of late 19th Century Victorian that dates back to 1888.

933 18th Street-Olive Apartments- The Olive Apartments is a 4 story building that was completed in 1915 and contains 12 living units.  Notice the ornate cornice near the roofline of the building.  This building anchors the northern portion of the Sherman Hill Neighborhood on 18th Street.

18th Street-Kingsway Cathedral Apartments- Sitting on the corner of 18th and Crocker Streets is the Kingsway Cathedral Apartments.  This very old brick apartment building dates back to 1890.

Kingsway Cathedral-  The Kingsway Cathedral is located on the corner of 19th and Crocker Streets and is the only remaining church found in the Sherman Hill District.  The building has recently been vacated due to structural concerns with the foundation, which was allegedly damaged during the reconstruction of I-235.  Missing from this photo is the once local landmark "Jesus Saves" sign which was perched atop the bell tower.

19th Street Residential Vernacular- Looking down the sidewalk on 19th Street, you can see the ornate detailing on several Victorian homes, and the decorative wrought-iron fencing found in front of several homes.

733 19th Street Rowhomes-  One of the few remaining row houses in Des Moines, this small row of painted Italianate brick homes is on 19th Street and tucked in between several small Victorian bungalows.

641 19th Street-Portwell Apartments- Another two building brick apartment complex on the corner of 19th and Woodland.  The Portwell Apartments were built in 1904 and contain 24 living units.

672 19th Street-Essex House Apartments- The seven unit Essex House Apartments on 19th Street is one of the few neighborhood apartments that have received a more modern stucco cladding over the brick underneath.  The apartments were built in 1914.

17th Street-Crowell Apartments- This unique apartment building is in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style and dates back to 1910.  It features a two story colonnade, with Ionic styled columns supporting it.

17th Street-Crowell Apartments- Another frontal view of the Crowell Apartments.  Notice the slope and incline the property is built on.  The building is on the former site of the Des Moines University.

707 19th Street- A small street retail shop on 19th Street has apartments of the upper floor and eclectic shop on the ground level.

743 19th Street Apartments- An interesting looking apartment complex along 19th Street definitely captures the eye.  The 13 unit apartment was originally built in 1890 and has undoubtedly seen some exterior "modifications" along the way.  Not sure if this color scheme even existed in the 1890's!

753 19th Street- A very old Queen Anne Victorian home with Italianate touches is nestled into the 19th Street residential vernacular.  This house was built in 1872.

800 19th Street Commercial Building- A small 20th Century Commercial Era building on 19th Street currently sits vacant.  Before the new MLK Parkway was completed, this portion of 19th Street was once a high-traffic thoroughfare that allowed a neighborhood market to remain in business.  Since the construction of the parkway, many other nearby commercial buildings were demolished and the business that once occupied the ground floor of this building has since dried up.

20th Street Garden Courtyard- What was once an empty lot on 20th Street after the original structure was torn down has been converted into a garden courtyard for the adjacent brick double home.

640 20th Street-Carter House- A circa 1870's Italianate house on 20th Street was once the former home of an urban retreat Bed & Breakfast.  The home was moved from its original location of 12th Street and Woodland Avenue.
