Iowa City, Iowa is the county seat of
Johnson County and a principal city of Eastern Iowa.
It is located along Interstate 80, 112 miles to the east of
Des Moines and 25 miles south of Cedar Rapids.
Situated on the banks of the Iowa River, this historically
important city was the former capital city of Iowa from 1842
to 1857, and is home to a major public state university in
the University of Iowa. With a rapidly growing
metropolitan population of 115,000, the Iowa City-Coralville
metro area's brightest years may be just ahead of it.
The University provides Iowa City with a wide variety of
cultural and sporting events, allowing Iowa City to be one
of the most vibrant and lively cities in Iowa. The
city is full of clean neighborhoods and parks, a historical
and vibrant downtown, interesting architecture from all
periods and is constantly ranked as "one of the best places
to live" in quality of life listings. The highly
educated populace is employed by a large workforce of
medical workers from the large hospital complexes,
educational workers with the University of Iowa, with a good
percentage of technical and office workers in between.
Iowa City is considered by many to be the cultural hub of
Iowa, and is typically highly regarded amongst many Hawkeye
State residents.
