Also, the area that is being graded seems to be somewhat tucked in behind what's already been built along Mills Civic Parkway, so perhaps it won't be extremely prominent.

Yah, its behind the Applebees so it will most likely be hidden by it and other future businesses

Wouldn't be surprised to start seeing the proverbial Walgreens and a few more fast food restaurants open up too. As long as the development standards can stay relatively high, I think the area will be in even better shape from a retail success standpoint if you can start providing for the new nearby dwellers.

Walgreen's was to go in to Paradise Point next to the property, but either dropped out or is on a hold pattern. I believe it was going to be right in front of Kohl's.

Makes sense to me. There never was a concentration of high-end furnishings stores near this location on Hickman, and usually these types of businesses tend to cluster together. There's a concentration on 100th Street, but not this far east on Hickman.

Good to see some commercial construction happening again to fill in all the gaps around Jordan Creek.

Nicest Firestone store in the chain complements the nicest Casey's store in the chain at the Galleria.

Inside word is that 30% of Trader Joe's business is coming from outside the Golden Circle and not many WDMers are shopping there at all.

But how is business overall? As an aside, that would mean that 70% IS coming from the general metro area. Not bad. Certainly not bad that a decent chunk is getting drawn in from outside the area.

Sounds like things are going well.

My understanding is that it's going really well, but not well enough to open a second metro store. The feeling is that opening a store on the east side of the metro (or the west side of DSM proper/ Ingersoll area) would canibalize the current store.

As would be expected. With it being new enough to the metro and a specialty, more than one right now would shock me.

Trader Joes is doing an outstanding business at this location. While I have no official word on any second DSM location in the future for them, look for a bunch of construction to start taking place along this corridor in the coming months.

Trader Joe's has been busy or very busy each time I have been there. I have recognized other people from Des Moines on some of my visits. Whether the people living in this neighborhood are lining up to buy Organic Joe O's is anybody's guess.

It's about time to get more construction to help fill in the gaps and the empty pad sites. It's been a quiet past couple of years along Mills Civic Parkway. Let's get those CVS Pharmacies' and Dunkin Donut's rolling!

For as much residential growth that is happening in the area, there still seems to be a shortage of neighborhood type retail options. Chik-Fil-A and Panda Express are making in roads, but I'm really surprised more fast food restaurants haven't popped up. Where are the McDonald's, Wendy's, etc.? They would have to make a killing on what has become probably one of the most traveled streets in all of the metro.

most of the exterior work on the panda express is finishing up and it looks quite nice in my opinion. Lots of stone work on the exterior. The Chick-fil-a next door has steel and frame work up.

Steel is up on the new Ethan Allen store near 60th and Mills Civic and we should be seeing some things pop up near Trader Joes in the near future.

The register had an article on the Jordan Creek area and mentioned a couple of new additions to this development. While signs of life in this area are a definite improvement over the last couple of years, adding a Goodwill store and an Aldis aren't necessarily the harbingers of good things to come.

I gleaned that the residential component is finally going to start catching up with the already built commercial. Look for some more office space to come online as well.

So if you don't make over $50,000 you're not welcome on the west side of town? I don't really shop at Goodwill, but I have found some good things there. As far as Aldi's, yes it's cheaper food and that's because of there no frill marketing. Plus they have some great items that you can't find anywhere else. Some of their German items that they bring in are great.

I'll let MT speak for himself, but I believe he meant more in terms of uniqueness of what the development offers the metro vs just more of the same.

I think he was referring to this being an "upscale" development.
Galleria at Jordan Creek is a 700,000+ square foot upscale community shopping center

I understand that all went out the window with Walmart, but that was the original intention.

Absolutely what I meant. I don't think anyone ever thought that this development and others along George C Mills and Jordan Creek Parkway would become the Plaza or Miracle Mile, but I do think many of us hoped that it wouldn't be another University, Douglas, or Hickman Avenue with slightly nicer buildings. Which it is.

I'm not saying all economic demographics shouldn't be welcomed and find a place to shop or be entertained. I would never champion exclusivity. What I do champion is uniqueness, identity, and image and the latest round of additions is a mixed bag that I believe moves the needle to more of the same.

On the same page with MW. Isn't this our Country Club Plaza? I am pretty sure this is another comparison we were given.

This whole area has something for just about everyone and there are many 'good' things to come. Jordan Creek mall is on the verge of some really great additions providing the economy doesn't tail spin again. This also includes some of the vacant land areas around the mall and don't forget the new interchange a bit further west. Once that becomes reality, both Waukee and West Des Moines will start to see some very positive announcements. While the stores being announced are a far cry from what was envisioned (For now), they draw customers. Over 33,000 vehicles a day travel the Mills corridor. That doesn't go unnoticed by retailers and other commercial businesses.

Always good to hear your updates KG. I can sense the momentum picking up steam again just being out there. (not that it was ever dead by any means) Alot of residential activity helps that much more with rooftops equaling more and more pocketbooks to choose from.

Map updates on the Galleria site show Pier 1 Imports and Carter's Babies and Kids going in next to Trader Joe's (With one bay still open). The already mentioned Goodwill going behind Casey's and a Specialty Grocery Sale Pending next to the Firestone store (would this be the talked about Aldi's?).

I think this has already been brought up, but it bears repeating: how can this area possibly support another grocery?! Costco, Wal-Mart, Trader Joe's, Target, and Hy-Vee are all already within a 5 minute drive of each other and Gateway already went out of business! Do the people who live in Glen Oaks eat 5x as much as the general population? I know, I know, this area is frequented by far more people than that, but I would argue Trader Joe's and Costco get the vast majority of 'tourist' grocery shoppers.

Good point however part of the reason is residential density, traffic count and exclusivity in the sense that there is only one. There is only 1 Jordan Creek and many stores inside thus people drive from miles away to visit and maximize their shopping. Same goes for COSTCO. Target hits up another crowd, Hy-Vee is on the other side of the interstate and if you live off Jordan Creek or to the west, you probably never visit the Hy-Vee off 50th-ish
