New Des Moines Fire Department Facilities

Postby Better Life dude on Mon Mar 16, 2009 8:44 am

Plans are underway for a new main fire station in downtown Des Moines. It will be located at 16th Street and West MLK Jr. Parkway. The city of Des Moines already owns the land. Construction of the main station would begin in 2011 after a new training facility is built on the east side of Des Moines. The sale of general obligation bonds issued by the city would finance both projects. There is a possibility that construction could be moved up to as soon as this year if some federal stimulus money could be allocated to this project. No word on that yet.
From the Business Record:
Plans for new fire department facilities moving forward with land acquisition
BY TODD RAZOR
The Des Moines City Council has authorized the acquisition of an East Side property with plans to construct a logistics and training facility for the city's fire department.

The resolution, which established the fair market value of 5.5 acres of vacant land at 2715 Dean Ave. at $313,000, is part of a larger plan to replace an obsolete downtown fire station with a 40,000-square-foot building at the corner of 16th Street and West Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. In addition to providing a training facility for the department, a new maintenance shop will be also located at the Dean Avenue site, which will help improve department efficiencies, according to the report.

"We expect to move forward on (the acquisition) immediately," said Merrill Stanley, deputy city manager. He said the process will take about 45 days to complete.

Having "shovel-ready" sites could help in obtaining funds from the federal economic stimulus package, Stanley said. Nine requests for proposals have been already been sent, he said, adding that the city expects to select a design consultant in April.

The city of Des Moines Real Estate Division already owns the West Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway site and has been in contact with the East Side property owners, Andrew and Ruth Holt, to work out the details of the transfer.

The city has budgeted $7 million, financed primarily through the issuance of general obligation bonds, for the approximately 50,000-square-foot logistics and training facility, Stanley said, and more bonds are proposed to be issued in the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010, to finance the fire station.

The best-case scenario, Stanley said, would be to secure the federal funding and begin building both facilities near the end of 2009. A failure to secure stimulus money could potentially delay breaking ground on the training center until early 2010 and on the fire station until the summer or fall of 2011.

I wonder what the old firestation would be used for.
It could make a cool new restaraunt. Keeping the fire poles would be a must. :)

I'm excited to see the possibilities that could come with the reuse of the Central Fire Station. It's definitely got some facade design amenities that would make this unique and worthy of preserving. Check out this obviously dated photo with that old green hulk in the back. How far we've come.

I believe this was the preferred location for a central fire station, just south of MLK Parkway West near the DICO Battery plant/Superfund site. I've heard the amount of research necessary to find a site that doesn't significantly change fire response times to not alter the fire insurance rates of major downtown corporations was pretty immense process.

Here is a rendering of the proposed DMFD Fire Training and Logistics center. This building is located in the 2700 Block of Dean Avenue and should start construction later this year. This building is supposed to host the main administrative offices for the DMFD as well as truck servicing and fire fighter training facilities, which should cut back on the size and cost of the new Central Fire Station building. Many of these functions occur in the Central Fire Station now.

The renderings for the new Central Fire Station should be released fairly soon.

I hope it's not decided that's it's cheaper to tear down the old fire station than to renovate it. It's not the most charming fire station I have ever seen. A lot of the old ones had big clocks or clock towers. But still, it could have a hundred uses. It's near 10th Street, the Western Gateway. Could be a central art station like what Shreveport did with their old downtown fire station. http://bit.ly/hiwLnK

Other cities have turned theirs into everything from breweries to a public market.

I maybe naive, but I think there is very little reason to worry about this being torn down.

Looks like the new Central Fire Station will be moving forward this fall, with the council set to approve the construction bids at tomorrow night's meeting. Definitely not as grand of a "central" fire station as I had originally imagined, but they moved their admin function, offices and service/repair to the training and logistics facility that is under construction on Dean Avenue as a cost savings measure.

I like it. Anything more elaborate would be inappropriate with current budget issues, etc., but it still is a fine looking building.

Will Burnett - "In 1896 Will Burnett was appointed Chief, having served as Assistant Chief since February 22, 1895, and he served continuously as Chief of the Fire Department until his death on March 27, 1937, as a result of burns received at a fire on March 26, 1937." from http://www.dmgov.org/Departments/Fire/P ... story.aspx

Here's a an article by Chief Burnett and photo of the Des Moines Fire Department from the 1915 book American city Vol 13 - http://books.google.com/books?id=0KcrAQ ... &q&f=false

Which may have been around the time the Fire Station was built.

Update photo of the Fire Training and Logistics Facility over on Dean Avenue. This will by far be the best looking building on this blighted, old industrial stretch of properties.

The Central Fire Station will be hosting an open house on May 1st, from 3 pm to 6 pm. Bring the kiddies for a tour of the station and to see the equipment up close.
