Science Center of Iowa

Postby DMRyan on Tue Jul 06, 2004 3:47 pm

The Science Center of Iowa is a large part of the VisionIowa projects under construction in Des Moines. This $60 million, 110,000 sq. ft. facility will move SCI out of its currently cramped quarters in Greenwood Park. The new SCI will have two theaters, one of them being DSM's first IMAX. And yes, the famed entrance pendulum will be a part of this project as well.

A small 3-story parking garage will also be going up adjacent to SCI. I'm not all that crazy about the look from the exterior, but the IMAX shrouded in glass and metal with the lit reflecting pool will be a nice touch.

This project has great visability and will be one more feather in the cap of a district that is quickly emerging between Court Avenue, Sec Taylor Stadium and the riverfront.

I updated the webcam to show the amazing progress that's been made recently. On August 27th, the Science Center will annouce the first IMAX film they plan on showing on during the grand opening next April. 300,000 annaul visitors are expected at the new center, compared to 175,000 at the old location.

Speaking of the old location, any ideas for what to do with this facility? My idea would be to turn it into another annex of the art center. We already have a great art center specializing in contemporary and modern works, how about one that houses the classical arts? You could turn the street that runs from the Art Center and the Science Center into a small "avenue of arts" with unique sculptures and lighting. With Greenwood Park's ampitheater being refurbished, this would be an awesome destination in our midtown area!

Again, an updated photo from 8/16/04. The building is well on its way to becoming fully enclosed and the adjacent parking ramp should be starting construction soon.

Wow! ... that is going to look very impressive from the road there.

Would be nice if some of Susan Buffett's money left to the Buffett Foundation would find it's way into an impressive science museum like this for Omaha... something we desperately need (these kinds of exhibits sort of float between Durham Western Heritage, the Children's Museum, and the Strategic Air and Space Museum today).

The side facing the road (MLK Parkway) is actually the rear facade of the building that won't look quite as sharp as the others. This side is supposed to be heavily landscaped, but I hope the passers-by on the road still get a glimpse of the reflective water and glass that will line the IMAX theater portion.

This project is literally within blocks of the riverfront and Sec Taylor stadium and the Court Avenue Entertainment District. I can't wait to see all the action when all projects are complete.

Good to see this progressing along nicely. I have yet to see an IMAX movie so I am getting anxious for this thing to open up.

They're OK, very good sound quality, a little loud though, pictured is very convincingly 3d (it's a circle bent in like this ')') but can give you a freakishly bad headache.

jhuston - We took the kids to the Children's Museum on Sunday. I liked the Titanic exhibit and the other things for the kids. But you are right, as Omaha grows and with the Buffet money, they'll need to expand things like that. The zoo is a hard act to follow and you just kind of expect everything to be on that scale.

We were at the zoo on Saturday and, as always, it was fantastic.

The DSM City council approved the parking garage for the new science center. They actually increased the height by a story to accomodate the probable future residential conversion of the Rumley Building nearby.
No renderings of the garage has been released yet.

I noticed the other day that they finally took down the horrible looking powerlines and towers next to the Science Center and the Whiteline Loft builidng:
Image

Does anyone know if the city plans to bury the rest of these lines? I'm not sure but it seems like these are the same lines that run along the river up to University?

Not sure about the power lines, hopefully someone else can post some info on that. I was down there today and noticed they have started applying the exterior skin on one of the theaters, atleast I think it is one of the theaters. It looks real slick.

That's the IMAX theater and if you look at the rendering, that shiny metallic looking stuff will be incased in glass and will be lit up at night and reflect off of the pool of water that will surround it.

I noticed they're beginning to make big progress on the getting the exterior cladding up. Does anyone have a picture of this thing from the north looking south at 4th Street?

I don't know if there's any long term plans to get rid of anymore power lines along the northern downtown/west side of the river. I think those lines orginate from the Center Street Dam anyway and aren't connected to the line that went along MLK, but I could be wrong. The contract the city had with Mid American was just to get rid of the lines along the eastern portions of MLK.

Heres a shot from 4th St looking at the north entrance (not real close-up):

This will really be a nice entrance and focal point for the science center I think. This area north of the science center could use some cleaning up. What's the story with the old station. Any word of renovation in the future. This area has some real potential!!

The station on the West side of the street has been rehabbed for office space. I'm not sure what's occupying the freighthouse on the east besides the German bar. And that surface parking lot to the south of the German Bar is where a 4 story parking garage is being/will soon be built for the Science Center and future Rumley Building renovation.

If the Court Avenue Project gets kicked off, this will clean up the area tremendously. Either way, there is going to be a hell of a lot more vitality in this area than what we're used to.

The first IMAX film to be shown when the Science Center of Iowa opens next April will be "The Living Sea".
http://www.sciowa.org/newproj/PDFs/LivingSeaPR.pdf

On another note, I was glad to see that the facade facing MLK will be clad in limestone or brick. From the rendering, I thought it was going to be some kind of cheap stucco/eface material. I think the Science Center may end up looking better than the renderings will have you believe. Up close it's certainly a more imposing building size-wise than the renderings show.

Yeah....SCI is coming together nicely.....however, I'm not sure about this sea/ocean movie. It's 10 years old---Yes, I understand the market research they did on it, etc. etc. But for a modern building, and hi-tech and such....Just seems odd. Kinda funny though-- it's a bit ironic you think?!

Wow I never noticed the building cut off a street. So is a street going to be going infront of the entrance or is it going to just be a dead end?

If you go south down 4th Street, you'll practically drive through the front of the center before you take a right on Vine Street. Eventually, Vine Street will run east-west in on the north side of the science center, giving access to the parking garage under construction.

I really hate that parking garage idea especially with those lofts all around it. I would have been put to better use as a residential bulding. I hope it looks like the garage on Locust in front of Principal and next ING if not better, I just hope its not a plain ol' drab concrete one.

To the Science Center's credit, the parking ramp will be built so an additional two levels can be added at a later date. Here is more info on the parking from the Des Moines Register:

Science Center to charge visitors to park

By BERT DALMER
REGISTER STAFF WRITER
October 3, 2004

Most visitors to the new Science Center of Iowa will have to pay to park at the $62 million attraction when it opens next spring in downtown Des Moines.

The pay-to-park arrangement, the first of its kind for a Des Moines museum, will place added strain on the center's finances but could also help draw more patrons.

Science Center Chairman Tom Hutchins said he does not expect the yet-to-be-set price of parking to affect attendance.

"We're not overly concerned about that," he said. "We understand that's part of the total experience of getting into the facility."

Some of those people eager to visit the center, however, said a parking fee, on top of admission and other costs, could factor into decisions on making repeat visits.

"That could be kind of tough, especially if you've got a big family, and the kids want to go to the IMAX," said Sharon Smith, a grandmother of three from Des Moines' south side.

"They might have to do something about setting times when you could park there with no charge."

The decision to have paid parking was quietly formalized earlier this month when center leaders struck a deal with Des Moines city officials and a private developer to build a three-story garage north of the museum.

The garage will be located on city property but will be privately built and operated by Nelson Development, an Urbandale construction firm.

The center will not share in the parking revenues, but it will pay about two-thirds of the garage's yet-to-be determined operating costs.

The original Science Center, located about 4 miles west of downtown in Greenwood Park, now offers free parking, as does its neighbor, the Des Moines Art Center, and every other museum in the city.

Planners of the new Science Center said they knew parking would be an issue at the downtown site.

However, building their own garage was never seriously considered because of the cost.

Center officials decided that an existing city parking lot on the site was too small, so they asked developers for proposals to build the multi-story garage instead. Nelson Development was the only company to bid on the $4.8 million job, city officials said.

Ticket prices for admission to the center will be "in the ballpark" with those anticipated by consultants in 2001 - about $7 for adults and another $7 for the center's new IMAX theater, Hutchins said.

While parking costs and hours have yet to be announced, the center has guaranteed garage operators about $327,000 in annual parking revenue - or about $4.25 a day, year-round, for each of the 210 spaces intended for museum patrons. Any shortfall in revenues will be reimbursed by the center.

Davis Sanders, a parking consultant for Foresite RDG of Des Moines, said the revenue projections seem high for a typical downtown garage. The Science Center's promise commits about $130 per space, per month, which exceeds most monthly rates in the area.

"It's not the market rate," Sanders said.

Officials said the parking will be offered to the general public and could be used for overflow parking for fans attending Iowa Cubs baseball games nearby, or during farmers' markets along Court Avenue in the summer.

City officials persuaded the developer to build the garage's third level - with a capability to add two more - in the belief that more loft-style apartments will be constructed in the vicinity. The city will lease the top floor of the structure for two years at a cost of $253,000, with a right to sublease its 88 spaces.

The extra deck brings the total of spaces at the garage to 298.

"This was an opportunity for the city to add parking very cheaply," said Andrea Hauer, the city's economic development coordinator.

Science Center leaders have encountered some other unexpected costs since taking the land, including $900,000 in interest for a loan that will front the museum money pledged through future donations.

Leaders still have to raise about $10 million to fulfill the project's $62 million budget.

if these guys had any clue, they would make the parking garage with a street level retail...think about it---you got the science center literally in your back yard, along with hesan house and the to be built condos on court ave, along with the condos right there by the science center.
this would be a win win situation...the fatty's can park their car, and still get some street level shopping.....and with the visitor at the science center and peeps living in the condos....voila!!

The fattys?

I do agree, although I'll bet money that's not what we'll be seeing. SCI wants this parking done cheap, cheap, cheap.
It would be nice to at least make it have bays for future retail like the garages that front Court Avenue, although I doubt if they'll be filling in with retail anytime soon.

I would beg of the city to not allow a precast concrete parking garage in this location. At least slap some brick on it!

A brief blurb from the DSM Business Record:

Deere donates $1 million to new Science Center of Iowa

The Science Center of Iowa announced its official opening date and a major donor this morning at a 10:30 a.m. press conference. The new SCI, located downtown between Southwest Third and Fifth streets (north of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway extension and south of Court Avenue) will open its doors at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005.
With less than six months to go until opening day, Deere & Co. announced today its pledge of $1 million, the largest gift the company has ever made in Central Iowa, according to Dave Rodger, the general manager of the John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny. Rodger said the project is a "natural partnership" with the company's ongoing support of science-based educational opportunities for today's youths.

"John Deere is proud to align with this world-class project in a state where science and technology lead the way for many industries," Rodger said in a press release. "Technology is at the heart of business innovation at John Deere and our long-term goals to seek and support a skills-based workforce closely align with the Science Center's objectives to stretch and strengthen participants' skills and abilities."

According to Mary Sellers, the executive director of SCI, more than $7 million in public and private donations have been raised this year for the new science center, bringing total contributions to $52 million of the $61.9 million goal. In recognition of Deere's contribution, the SCI's adventure theater will officially be named the John Deere Adventure Theater. The 175-seat multipurpose theater will host large-scale demonstrations and live performances and will serve as a forum for discussions on science and technology.

We havn't talked about this project in a while. I drove by there just recently. I am wondering how they plan to open this by May. Anyone have thoughts or ideas? There is still exterior work to be done, and the inside looks to be far off.

While I will say this project is looking pretty nice, the mix of brick and glass and is looking sharp. However, that parking garage is absolutley hideous. Oh my god, you've got to be kidding me. All it needs is the IEC logo and we are set gang! I realize the short time factor they had, but we all new damn good and well that lot was going to be made for a parking garage, even still, it's horrible, it would have been nice to have the brick of the garage somewhat match thh SCI. but really, (other than the pathethic parking garage with nothing in the way of street retail, which right in that area, would be prime, errrrrrr, another ball dropped), this project looks great!!
I just don't know how they plan to open in May.

I think they'll be alright. Up until the horrible weather of the past few weeks, they've really cooked on this project. Most of the exterior work looks pretty minor, like putting up some brick work, metal trim and enclosing the IMAX theater in glass. It hopefully only gets warmer from here on out, so we'll see.
