2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Postby wildbill on Wed Mar 28, 2012 10:18 am

The USA Track and Field championships are returning to Drake Stadium! No dates were announced. Coming off an Olympic year, this should spark a lot of buzz and revenue around the Metro.

USA Track & Field on Wednesday announced its intent to host the 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on the campus of Drake University.

Tickets are now on sale.

$60 GA for all sessions, $80 reserved for all sessions. I am assuming single-session tickets go on sale later. Interestingly, Dahls Tickets (Iowa Events Center) is selling the tickets and not Drake.

One has to start wondering what is going on at Drake. They show a good game on the "outside" for track & field and other sports but "inside" I wonder. They have 1000s upon 1000s of high school athletes on their campus at least twice a year, yet their teams are horrible. ISU, UNI, Grinnell, Dubuque, Wartburg, BV, Central and a host of small schools all have indoor tracks to host competitions, meets; Drake with their history doesn't have one. Last year during the Drake Relays there wasn't signage nor announcements for NCAA T&F Nationals and now they are barely participating in the USA Outdoor T&F Championships......and on another note, does anyone remember WHO the host school was for last year's NCAA Women's BB Regionals? I'll give you a hint, it wasn't a school located 5 miles from Wells Fargo Arena. How many times does one hear about the sports programs, camps, clinics that Drake is hosting to get students on their campus?

One needs to start wondering. It didn't start with the Iowa Events Center selling tickets for an event held at Drake ..... but maybe it should.

You mean beyond hosting major events rather than getting turned down for them like DSM constantly does with basketball?

They have 1000s upon 1000s of high school athletes on their campus at least twice a year, yet their teams are horrible.

Most private schools in cold weather are. Penn has an even bigger event and doesn't do anything of note with their own teams, either.

ISU, UNI, Grinnell, Dubuque, Wartburg, BV, Central and a host of small schools all have indoor tracks to host competitions, meets; Drake with their history doesn't have one.

Much like the last time you brought this up, it's something they're trying to do. They aren't going to build a D3 facility, and unlike Iowa State/UNI they can't receive a direct state subsidy to build it.

Last year during the Drake Relays there wasn't signage nor announcements for NCAA T&F Nationals and now they are barely participating in the USA Outdoor T&F Championships.

I can't speak to the former; I took this as more of a partnership with the wider sporting community for the latter. Which probably makes sense and all.

the host school is pretty much window dressing on that, but I think Drake prefers to focus on their strong events (track hosting).

How many times does one hear about the sports programs, camps, clinics that Drake is hosting to get students on their campus?

Drake's marketing isn't great; you'll get no argument from me there.
