DSM: Municipal Services Center

Postby DMRyan on Tue Aug 21, 2012 8:40 pm

Here's an early look at phase I of the new Municipal Services Center, that will break ground soon on Scott Avenue, just east of SE 14th Street. This is largely on the site of the former Carroll Auto Salvage property that was recently cleaned up.

This facility is the future home of many city departments, including Parks & Rec, Public Works, Traffic, etc. Phase I is only a fraction of the long term plans to move the entire Public Works yards to this site. Long term, there's mention of trying to have other governmental entities or utilities move onto the site to share services. Early suggestions include Polk County, the State of Iowa, the DMPS Bus Garage, and getting Mid-American Energy's service facility off of the SE downtown riverfront.

DMRyan, do you know if there is any plans for LEED certification for this building as with other recent new City buildings?

Yes, I wouldn't expect a platinum rating here, but some level of LEED certification is anticipated.

From the renderings, it looks similar to the new IUB/OCA building at E. 14th and Court.

I really like the retention ponds here.... Ryan, do you know if they are planning on using any grey-water with this facility?

That would open up some potentially sweet options for a mixed use project along the riverfront

Would movement of DSM public works also open up that corner north of MLK right east of the river. Im not real downtown fluent I apologize.
