There was a "for lease" sign in the window, but also a handwritten sign on the door stating that they would re-open the week of June 6th. Are they perhaps downsizing or moving somewhere?
Earlier this week, there was a story on KCCI that The Art Store has gone out of business. There was also a story on that in the 6/11/11 Des Moines Register.

I can recall when the original owners had two stores, one at MLK and Woodland and in Merle Hay Mall. I patronized it now and then, but not being all that artistic myself, not a lot. It was a good place for ink cartridges for my old Shaeffer fountain pens and they only place in town where I could find sealing wax to use with my signet ring. When my mom was here around Xmas, she also found the nylon chisel tipped calligraphy pens she wanted but couldn't find at home in Rockford, IL. the staff was always helpful, friendly and knowledgable.
