I had said they were not giving out free food on Tuesday, which was reported to be the opening day. I was there Tuesday and got charged.

As I drove by this morning on the way to work it looked like Tuffy's/Auto Repair Building just East of the new strip mall at the NE corner of Merle Hay and Douglas... for parking and ingress/egress or another building?

The old Hardee's Restaurant turned used car lot near Merle Hay and Douglas is getting leveled so a brand new Hardee's store prototype can take its place its place. This corner looks so much better now.

I kept thinking Hardees should buy back there old spot back, I must have telepathic powers!!!

With the new one going up on Army Post and SW9th and the newer one on Euclid, there are building back up. The new owners are so much better than the ones 10 years ago.

^^^ You can't take all the credit  , as I've been thinking the same thing ever since it was obvious that Hardees was making a comeback.

It will be nice to see this very visible lot back up and running again.

There was a quick mention of the new Hardee's in this article from the Register about the New Army Post/SW 9th Hardee's. Construction should start soon, with a fall opening planned.

Marino's Italian Restaurant is moving into the vacant building at the corner of Merle Hay and Hickman, according to a sign in the window. This should provide some more visibility for the restaurant and help that blighted corner a bit.

Yeah, this intersection needs a good CVS or something to clean it up in the worst way. Just don't take out the Chilli King!

I don't even like to eat at George the Chili King, but it's a nostalgic greasy spoon for Des Moines, and we don't need to lose any more nostalgia than we already have.

I mean, who wouldn't look at this actual photo of their chili cheese fries and want more...

It looks like this land was recently purchased by 4G Properties on July 26th.

4G Properties has the same Overland Park, KS address as Westar Foods which runs the Hardee's in central Iowa. I was worried that the sale didn't go through because the For Sale sign is still up (with no pending sale on the sign).

I was thinking that maybe they were splitting the lot in two which I why the for sale sign was still up. The entire lot seems too big IMO for the new style of Hardee's buildings I've seen around.

Westar told me it would be open in November. I asked if they were going to dual up the spot with a Red Burrito franchise (Hardee's fast food mexican store) and they said no.

In addition to Hardee's, the McDonald's at 3610 Merle Hay Road is set for a remodel to bring it in line with the new architectural prototype.

Anyone else hear of anything going on for the Merle Hay corridor? The activity seems to have slowed down a little bit.

There's a new retail building proposed for the now vacant land just south of Merle Hay Mall, along Douglas Avenue. This was the site of the old Firestone garage before it was demolished. Should be a fairly solid lineup of fast casual and fast food tenants based on early indications.

The old Taco John's building on Grand (far east side of WDM) has an Abelardo's sign on it now. They just recently opened in the old Hardee's building on Ingersoll, too.

The old Taco Bell restaurant on Douglas is vacant, if they taking on old fast food spots, that would be good since Tasty Tacos closed down the street.

Well, one year later, I see a sign at that old Taco Bell building on Douglas (56th and Douglas) saying that Abelardos's is going in there.

This strip mall has started construction. There is a digital sign up on Merle Hay Road that appeared to show a few of the tenants as Noodles & Company, Cherry Berry Frozen Yogurt, and another strip mall Taco John's location. Not sure if that is confirmed though...

This is the development that is mentioned a couple posts up (Artist's picture included). The restaurants look to be Taco John's and Noodles & Co. The yogurt place is Cherry Berry Frozen Yogurt.

CVS has plans of building a new store at the corner of Hickman Road and Merle Hay Road, on the site of the long vacant BP gas station.

That will be nice getting that corner cleaned up. FWIW....I believe that was a Sinclair station if you're talking about the one that sits at an angle to the corner...same side as the Ace Hardware store. Just want to know if I'm thinking of the right corner.
