Currently Apple is no longer building stores the size of JC, and the JC store has outgrown its current space...and then some. The biggest problem is where to go in the mall that would improve its current position. I'd love to get a store with an outside entrance.

Heard an interesting fact about JC mall -- the highest grossing store in the mall is Apple. And yes, they could use a bigger footprint.

Well, when a laptop costs $1500, it would be hard not gross a sh*t ton...

Not to rain on JTCs parade but Apple is the highest grossing store in many malls (if not most). In fact, the sales per square foot are so out of whack that you usually have to exclude them from the overall mall #'s to get a good view of the mall.

I'm curious on how much sales psf JTC does? This is probably the best measure of a mall's overall health. I view JTC as a very strong mall on a national spectrum but I may be biased.

I have been told, by many sources, that the JTC does extremely well on a psf basis. Many of the stores in the mall are at or near the top in terms of their sales for their regions. As for the JTC Apple store, it generally puts to shame stores with twice the square footage and population it serves. Must be the friendly, happy staff.

Gross.
I was really hoping this concept would go into the Walnut Street area.

Every current location is in a mall, so not surprising at all. Would've been awesome to see something like that on Walnut or East Village!

I don't think conservative Von Maur is a company that takes a lot of chances. Suburban development is always the "safe" bet, as Davenport has experienced to the massive detriment of our downtown. Our developers are cowards. Von Maur also doesn't seem like it sponsors much here in the community. Kind of a quiet corporate headquarters. I would have love to see them sponsor an LPGA tournament at TPC Deere Run. Seems like their demographic...

Cowardice? Agreed.

Just returned from Madison, Wisc this weekend. The scale of development, residential and retail, dwarfs what we're doing at this moment. Sure it's a college town, but they have what, 15,000 more people in the metro than us? It's time some developers here step up and REALLY take a chance downtown. Opus_01 comes to mind...

Madison seems to have better land-use laws than Des Moines, everything in downtown seems higher density.

Developers prepare to break new ground at Jordan Creek

I hope that a lot of the empty spaces immediately around the mall finally get built up. There is a lot of undeveloped space both north and west of the mall (but still south of EP True and west of JC Parkway).

This will be the first hotel constructed in a while in this area. I expect more to follow.

I never even noticed that this was an outlot that could be developed. Just looking at aerials, there's a few holes to still fill in on the Jordan Creek property. I wonder what will ever get built on the vacant land on the north side of the mall?

Here's the coneptual rendering for the hotel:

Yeah, i never thought of that as a hotel site for sure, as its a fairly small lot.

The north side would be nice to get developed, but the question is what would fit there. Being on the opposite side of most traffic (mills civic), its not the greatest visibility for retail.

According to the Register, two stores are opening The Walking Company and Vera Bradley and one store is moving (True Style) and one is expanding (White House/Black Market).

Apple announced today that it is making larger stores for 20 locations in the United States. While I wouldn't hold my breath the Apple Store at JC will be one of them, I think this bodes well for a future expansion if the right spot opens up in the mall...say the closing of a national book retailer(although they wouldn't likely take all the square footage).
