An interesting look back into renderings of projects that failed, or were significantly changed before construction. Please feel free to post other examples from Des Moines, or elsewhere in the state.

I wish I had a rendering to share on this webpage, but does anyone remember a project called Capitol Center, which would have consisted of a triangle-shaped hotel and office buildings that would have turned the Locust Avenue bridge over the Des Moines river into an outside promenade? As part of the project, the Des Moines Botanical Center was going to be located nearby if I'm not mistaken. The project did not get enough votes in a bond issue to pass. This was around 1973.

To me, these three would have made the Western Gateway area something special, and their loss really took a toll on progress in that area:
