4 parking ramps? Are they trying to look like downtown Des Moines? Didn't know that.

There might be 5 if UIHC is bulding one.

The aerial that I posted http://bit.ly/xtDp7Q shows approximately 15 one story structures directly south of East 9th St and west of Quarry Road.

Mastermind, your post http://bit.ly/wEx4XV shows 2nd Ave with all kinds of new development on the east and west side of the street.

So, those one story structures in the aerial are being replaced? This is already an amazing project but if those one story structures are history too, even moreso. I don't know of another project in Iowa now or recently in the past which involved this much land or this many buildings being razed to make way for something totally new.

Here is a fairly recent photo of the progress on the UI Hospitals outpatient clinic in the IRL. Lots of other building going on right now as well. Will try to get some pics soon.

I'm about a week and a half late on this one, but BackPocket Brewery has opened in the IRL in a nice new building. In addition to the brew works itself, there is a new tasting room/bar in it. Here is a link to the website:

http://backpocketbrewing.com/

I have some photos of the outside of the building that I will post in a bit. They are from a few weeks ago, but at least the exterior was nearly complete at the time so you can see what it looks like.

Was in there this past weekend. Good beers, but then again, what beer isn't good?

Casbern, I'm not wild about the watery domestic, but so many micro-brews and "Craft" brews available these days are pretty awesome. Unless not available on some occasion, I only drink the micro and craft brews, often Samuel Adams or Fat Tire, Guiness, Amstel (for a lighter brew), Bells and a myriad of Iowa brews like Millstream (Amana) and Great River (Davenport). I've had one or two Backpockect flavors, but am determined to try some more. Must swing by the new HQ to test some out soon. For those who have not been nearby, here are some photos of the building from a few weeks ago before it opened. I think it's a nice addition to the eclectic mixture that the IRL already is, and will become. There's also another hotel going in that I have photos of somewhere. I'll probably just get some newer shots this weekend, though.

New renderings of the next phase of the Iowa River Landing project. Some of this almost seems to tie back into some of the buildings you see in the Amana Colonies.

Cabela's and Trader Joe's are two of the well sought-after and rumored tenants for this project. Makes sense that Cabela's would opt to build here instead of in the DSM area in my opinion. Gives them a little more breathing room from Bass Pro Shops and still serves a good sized market, right off the interstate.

I cruised over to Iowa City to check up on the progress on a few projects. Here's how the Iowa River Landing construction work is going:

Is the clinic right next to the Marriott ramp or does it have its own?

Decisions, decisions, is it too nippy to wear my shorts to the public open house today for the new University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics building at the Iowa River Landing. http://tinyurl.com/9tsbbtg

This is a big winner and beautiful building for UIHC and patients. It was desperately needed to help with the patient traffic.

I've always been a big fan of George Pappageorge (now there's a catchy name) and his partner, David Haymes. They started out in the 1980's by transforming old industrial buildings into townhouses and lofts. The past decade they have expanded into high rise towers like Museum Park East. http://www.flickr.com/photos/masmiguel/4683377971/

And now, George Pappageorge has designed the new restaurant for the IRL with a rooftop patio.

new restaurant announced Friday for Coralville's Iowa River Landing will feature contemporary architectural touches including a revolving entry door and rooftop patio.

30hop is scheduled to open in the summer of 2013, featuring contemporary cuisine from local cuisine and craft beers, the company said.

More than 50 beers on top on the main level bar and 30 beers on the rooftop bar. The 6,500-square-foot building will include both rooftop and main level patios, three fire features, an extensive central bar and liquid crystal display screens throughout the restaurant to update craft beer information.

IRL continues to be one of the hottest pieces of real estate in Iowa. Three parcels of land
immediately south of the UI's new Clinic will be a similar building. https://www.uihealthcare.org/IRL/

The IRL is really hot on development right now: Some progress updates on things already built (or under construction), plus a couple of new commercial tenant announcements (including a little cupcake operation from C.F. that I remember as a baby, now all grown up) and announcement of plans for more mixed-use condo buildings and townhouses within the area.

Here is another article on the same topic, with a cool rendering photo and, at the very end of the article, a hint of more development announcements to come soon.

This is another article regarding the second mixed use residential building slated to go into the IRL:

Construction on the multi-story residential development, which will include 60 condos on Ninth Street and 13 townhouses above retail space on the Landing’s main street, is expected to begin this fall. ... construction will wrap up in the spring of 2015, and the units will likely be available to the public to buy or rent around the same time.

The development will include one and two-bedroom units.

This is the best rendering for the proposed building I've found so far:

And it looks like the 30Hop restaurant/craft beer bar, which has broken ground already, will be on its corner:

I can tell you as an alum, this area is starting to look better and better for game day weekends. I am a little too old for most ped mall bars, so another walkable district within walking distance to Kinnick is extremely appealing.

I just checked, Iowa River Landing is 2.4 miles away from Kinnick, not exactly what I would call walking distance.

I dont think 2 miles is that big of a deal. It is only 1.5 miles to the Vine, and another 3 blocks to the Finkbine lot. It is 1.3 from the Ped Mall to Kinnick, so its not that much further. All else fails you can get a taxi, or take the Marriott shuttle.

The Daily Iowan is reporting new opening dates for some of the recently announced tenants to the Iowa River Landing. According to Coralville City Administrator Kelly Hayworth, more than $20 million of development is under construction or is planned for development.

Hayworth also said that plans for a Cambus route from the IRL, UIHC and downtown are being 'mulled'

Opening dates:
80,000 sq. ft. Von Maur - late July 2013
JoS A. Bank - Spring 2014
Scratch Cupcakery - June 2013
30hop restaurant - October 2013 - $ 3 million restaurant with a 400-seat capacituy
Charlotte's Deli - November 2013

It's a 49 minute walk in ideal conditions according to Google Maps. Couple less than ideal conditions with 70,000 people leaving an area at once, it could turn into a modern day running of the gauntlet. And I'm not walking 49 minutes to eat with 400 people.

Thank you to someone who actually looked this up and saw the time it will take to walk that distance. I can pretty much assure you, no one is going to walk straight from a game to the Iowa River Landing.

Just for comparison, walking the same distance in Des Moines: walking from the State Capitol to Terrace Hill.
For Omaha: walking from TD Ameritrade Park to Midtown Crossing
For Chicago: walking from the Willis Tower (Sears Tower) to the United Center.

Youre right, no one in Iowa city walks 1.5 miles on gameday. Maybe you fatties take 49 mins to walk a mile and a half, but i sure as hell dont. Guess what i walked 1.2 miles to and from lunch today, should i have drove?

Wow...name calling on the absolutedsm board. Had you read my entire post, you'd have seen that I said "according to Google Maps" but all you saw was "49 minutes." On the other hand, the average person walks a 20 minute mile, I would say that's not too far off.
I was unsure we had ever met but I'm hardly fat and bully to you for your walk.
