Council Bluffs Goes For IT

If this has been posted before about art in Council Bluffs, my apologies. But I gotta say, I am impressed. I use to think of Council Bluffs as kind of the poor stepchild of Omaha. There's a dawn of a new age in Council Bluffs. Look out Des Moines. Council Bluffs takes public art perhaps even more seriously. There are more than 50 sites designated for potential placement of public art. The Public Art Master Plan put forth a mission that "by 2015 Council Bluffs will become a prosperous urban area known for its cultural enlightenment and public art collection."

Council Bluffs has discovered that public art achieves important economic and social goals. It was never given any credit, but it didn't hurt to attract Google. It's a way for a smaller city to compete with much larger ones. People remember a place no matter how small or big because of the artwork that is publicly available.

Image The new Broadway viaduct, will begin construction this year will feature public art that can be perceived as rays of the sun in a sunrise.

vimeo has 3 videos about the artwork and the new viaduct: http://www.vimeo.com/4379967
