The Iowa State Capitol and adjacent grounds anchors the far east side of downtown and provides Iowa with what is the most ornate and majestic structure in the entire state. Construction started on the Capitol in 1871 and was completed in 1886 for $2,873,294.59. The gold dome is one of the tallest in the world rising 275 ft. An extensive restoration project of the exterior and interior of the statehouse began in 1983. As of August 2004, the total cost of the restoration has climbed to $80.5 million. This gallery provides photos of the statehouse, along with the monuments and buildings that makeup the 165 acre grounds overlooking Des Moines on what is one of the higher points in the city.
