The Kirkwood Hotel, originally built in 1865, burned to the ground in 1929. In its place rose the current building. The Kirkwood Civic Hotel closed as a hotel in early 2004. In July 2004, it was announced that the building would see new life as residential apartment building. The conversion transformed the 256-room hotel into a 54-unit apartment building.
