Iowa State University, founded in 1858, became the first designated land grant university in 1862. The University is home to seven colleges, including its well respected engineering, agriculture, veterinary medicine, and design programs. The school has left its mark on the world over the years through its contributions to science and technology. The most dramatic would arguably be the world's first digital computing device, the Atanasoff-Berry computer. Over 27,000 students enjoy a campus that encompasses more than 1900 acres and has received numerous accolades and awards for its design and architecture. The campus is in a unique part of Ames known as Campustown that once was separate from the city.
